Bulbjerg is located in north-western Jutland and is Denmark’s only bird cliff. The massive limestone cliff towers over Jammer Bay by almost 50 metres. Hundreds of black-legged kittiwakes find their breeding grounds in the rugged cliffs of Bulbjerg. From the car park near the summit plateau, we descend to the beach and from there take a walk along Jammer Bay. After our walk along the beach, we finally head inland and climb up to two small vantage points. From these little hills, we can enjoy beautiful views of Jammer Bay and the Limfjord. Whether during or after the tour: a dip in the cold waters of the North Sea, followed by a rest on the long sandy beach of Jammer Bay, is an absolute must.
From the car park on the Bulbjerg plateau, we first explore the summit area and enjoy the magnificent view down to the North Sea. Facing the sea, a staircase on the left leads down to the beach (signposted ‘Trappe til stranden’). Once on the sandy beach, we turn right and walk past the steep walls of the limestone cliffs. Here we observe the countless black-legged kittiwakes raising their young at dizzying heights. After the cliffs, we follow the sandy beach of Jammer Bay south-eastwards. The further we move away from Bulbjerg, the more secluded and deserted the beach becomes. About 45 minutes after leaving the bird cliffs behind us, we spot a car park on the right. We now leave the sandy beach and walk diagonally to the right across the car park. There we come to a hiking trail (“Nordsøstien”).
We maintain the general direction of our walk along the beach and follow the bridle and hiking path further south-east. On our right, we can already make out the small rise of Valbjerg Sande, the main peak of which we will climb later. We cross past Valbjerg Sande and later come to a clearly marked cart track that leads off to the right, heading south-west away from the shore. We take the cart track, which shortly afterwards turns into a forest track and leads us through a wooded area to a cross-path. We now turn right onto the cross-path and walk slightly uphill in a north-westerly direction. After a few minutes, we reach a rest area with a table and a bench. Immediately after the rest area, we come across a wooden post with a yellow dot. Here we turn right and follow the narrow meadow path up to the crest of Valbjerg Sande.
The meadow path makes a sweeping left-hand bend along the ridge of Valbjerg Sande and eventually joins a cart track. Now we turn right (stake with a yellow triangle) and follow a left-hand bend. Immediately after the left-hand bend, we turn diagonally left and walk south-westwards, following the yellow triangles. The meadow path winds its way through coniferous scrub and later joins a wide forest track. Now we turn right and follow the forest track in a north-westerly direction. A few minutes later we reach the tarmac road Ellidsbølvej. Just before the road, we turn left onto a meadow path that leads us slightly downhill and southwards, parallel to the road. After a good five minutes, we spot a wooden post with a blue mark on the right-hand side.
We now leave the meadow path to the right and head towards the road, which we cross by keeping diagonally to the left. On the opposite side of the road, we take Granvej, which leads us westwards to a fork in the path. Here we turn right. After a right-hand bend and a left-hand bend, we turn left at the following right-hand bend and follow a sandy path to the Tinghøj viewpoint. From there, we return to the path, turn left and keep left again at the next fork. We now head north and come to a crossroads. We turn left onto the wide path and, after a right-hand and a left-hand bend, return to the tarmac road leading to the Bulbjerg car park. We then keep to the right and shortly afterwards reach the starting point.
There are no places to stop for refreshments along the way.
