An easy, flat circular walk of around 2½ hours and 8.3 km, leading along a sandy beach by the sea and through the hinterland via small paths.
Coming from Fredrikshavn, take Road 40 towards Skagen. At the entrance to Skagen, just before the railway tracks, turn left at the roundabout onto Kattegatvej. At the crossroads, keep left again (Buttervej) and continue straight ahead at the next roundabout. Pass the car park of the Skagen Odde Nature Centre on your left and, at the following right-hand bend, turn left towards Skagen’s North Beach. Now follow the tarmac road to the car park on the beach and park your car there.

Grenen lies a few kilometres north-east of Skagen and forms the northernmost tip of Jutland. Here at the North Cape, the two seas, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat, meet. From the headland, you can observe the choppy waters and the waves of the two seas as they collide. The North Cape is a very popular destination for day trips. From Easter through to autumn, the Sandormen (Sandworm) attracts countless visitors from the car park by the art museum to Grenen.
Those who prefer a quieter experience can walk from Skagen’s North Beach to Grenen. On this almost deserted stretch of beach, you should definitely stop for a swim before joining the crowds at the northern tip. The North Beach extends about 2 kilometres west of Grenen further north into the sea, marking the northernmost point of Jutland. If you fancy a short circular walk, you can follow the coast south-westwards to the visitor car park and from there hike through the hinterland back to the starting point at Skagen’s North Beach.
From the car park at Skagen’s North Beach, we walk through the dunes to the sandy beach and on to the sea. Once at the water’s edge, we turn right and follow the beach eastwards. After about a kilometre, we pass the northernmost point of Jutland without even noticing. During the walk, we watch the large ocean-going vessels on the sea as they round the northern tip to reach the Kattegat from the Skagerrak. On the south side, the wide beach is bordered by dunes covered in beach grass and beach barley. Anyone still wishing to take a dip in the cold waters of the North Sea should do so here on the quiet Nordstrand. After an hour’s walk, we reach the northern tip of Grenen and now encounter significantly more visitors.
We watch the choppy waters of the two seas as they meet at the North Cape. We quickly snap the obligatory photo with one foot in the Skagerrak and one in the Kattegat before continuing along the beach in a south-easterly direction. We stay close to the coast and head straight for a lighthouse. After walking for another half an hour or so, we come to a large bunker complex on our right, just before the lighthouse. We turn right and walk past the bunker on the left. We now follow the sandy path through the overgrown dunes to the Grenen Art Museum. The museum also houses a café with a sun terrace.
We walk past the museum keeping to the left and then head for the roundabout at the entrance to the visitor car park. At the roundabout, we turn right, walk across the car park keeping slightly to the right and head for the north-western end of the large car park. There we come across a cart track and a no-entry sign. We follow the cart track north-westwards through the shade of the trees. Three minutes later, we spot a detached house on our right. At the same level as the house, we reach a fork and turn left. We now walk southwards through tall scrub and, after a few minutes, come to a cross-path.
We turn right onto the cross-path and follow the track north-westwards. After a few minutes, we reach a wooded area with low trees. There, our path first bends to the left and shortly afterwards leads us back in a right-hand curve towards the north-west. Shortly afterwards, we leave the woodland and come to a grassy area. To our left is a small pond with a wooden jetty. From this lovely spot to rest, we follow the path further north-west and eventually come to the tarmac road we drove along to the car park at Nordstrand. We turn right onto the tarmac road, walk northwards past a radar installation and thus return to the starting point.
